In his new article, From the Grammys to Abgobgloshie: African Viral Dance’s Troubled Circuits, Prof. Royston draws on 10 years’ worth of technology and media analysis of the Afrobeats dance genre and his on-going work in digital humanities and technology scholarship in Africa. He argues that while Afrobeats’ success is in large part due to ICT innovation, the circuits of digital globalization do not extend to African migrants themselves, and the by-products of this include ruinous returns. Also, in December 2023, Royston’s co-authored article with former Ph.D. student (now professor) Vincent Ogoti, titled “Voicing Afro-Modernity: How Black Atlantic Audiobooks Speak Back” was published in the Journal of African Cultural Studies.
