Credentials: PhD, African Cultural Studies and Anthropology (2020)
Position title: Assistant Professor of Anthropology, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville
Kevin Wamalwa earned a joint PhD in Anthropology and African Cultural Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2020, along with an MA in African Languages and Literature and an MA in Cultural Anthropology in 2014. He is now an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
Wamalwa’s research examines post‑violence memory, land conflict, local epistemologies of remembering, and practices of reconciliation in East Africa. He focuses on how small‑scale conflicts involving marginalized communities illuminate everyday forms of agency in narrating trauma, healing, and reconciling outside state mediation. His work engages questions of social and environmental justice, embodied trauma, memory of violence, and victimhood.
