This course focuses on the culture and lived experiences of the Yoruba-speaking people. It introduces students to the rich and distinctive traditions, language, and social life of Yoruba communities in West Africa and the Americas. Course materials include readings and multimedia resources covering key topics such as history, language, cultural practices, belief systems, education, family structures, economics, religion, and music.
Through these materials, students will develop a strong foundation in Yoruba philosophical traditions as well as an understanding of the culture’s contemporary expressions. The course offers a comprehensive overview of Yoruba worldviews and everyday life, encouraging critical engagement with both historical and modern perspectives.
All assigned readings will be in English. Some media materials may be presented in Yoruba with English subtitles.
