Kathryn Mara’s essay entitled “Jenoside, Génocide, Genocide: Socialization into Naming the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi” has been chosen as the Honorable Mention for the 2019 Bennetta Jules-Rosette Graduate Essay Award from the Association of Africanist Anthropology (AfAA). The Association lauded Mara for her sociolinguistic study, and her contributions to the anthropological understanding of the ways in which communities reprocess, remember, and rebrand traumatic events.
Mara’s Honorable Mention will be formally announced during the AfAA Reception at the Annual Meetings of the American Anthropological Association (AAA) in Vancouver, BC, Canada in November.
